Cairns Taipans "gladiator" Jack McVeigh's huge effort wasn't enough as his injury-ravaged side fell short in a 102-96 loss to New Zealand Breakers, slipping further adrift at the bottom of the NBL ladder.

Izaiah Brockington (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Parker Jackson-Cartwright (20 points, six assists) led the Breakers' commanding performance at the Cairns Convention Centre on Saturday night.
