McDonald's to hike menu prices for first time in 14 years - with cheeseburger increasing by 20p

McDonald's fans have been warned they will begin to see higher prices across its branches - with a fan favourite burger increasing by 20p.

The iconic fast-food chain has revealed that a number of popular items from their menu will rise in price as the cost of living continues to take its toll. Included on the list of price increases is the much loved 99p cheese burger which has risen for the first time in 14 years to £1.19.

McDonald's has blamed the recent prices hikes on the rising rates of inflation which has forced them to increase costs by around 10p and 20p.

Each McDonald's branch is free to set its own prices - except on the saver menu, where different franchises tend to charge the same amount.

McDonald's can recommend how its franchises set their prices, but can't order them to.

Most of the price rises will kick in this summer.

The items definitely going up in price are:

  • Breakfast meal
  • Main meal
  • McNugget share box
  • McFlurry
  • Large coffee

Some McDonald's items won't go up in price at all.

These are:

  • Salads
  • Wraps
  • Mayo chicken burger

McDonald's UK and Ireland chief executive Alistair Macrow said: "We’re living through incredibly challenging times and we’re all seeing the cost of everyday items, such as food and energy, increase in a way many of us have never experienced.

"Just like you, our company, our franchisees who own and operate our restaurants, and our suppliers are all feeling the impact of rising inflation."

McDonald's are the latest retailer that have been forced to increase their costs due to the rising levels of inflation that recently reached a 40-year high of 9.4% in June.

Macrow added: "Since we opened in the UK in 1974, we've committed to offering great tasting food at affordable prices, and that commitment will not change.

"But today's pressures mean, like many, we're having to make some tough choices about our prices."

It comes just a week after the popular chain announced they were launching a new rewards scheme that will let customers in the UK earn points and free food.

The rewards programme allows customers to earn one point for every penny spent. Those points can then be traded in for food, or donated to charity.
