McDonald's fans have been very clear in their demands on the fast-food chain and usually, the company gives in. When it comes to discontinued menu items that people have asked the chain to bring back, something the company did on Twitter last year, there were three clear favorites.
- Breakfast Bagels, specifically the Steak Bagel
- All-Day Breakfast
- The Snack Wrap
The fast-food giant listened to its customers on the first one bringing back Breakfast Bagels and the Steak Bagel, first regionally, and then nationally. The company has balked at bringing back All-Day Breakfast because it greatly complicates kitchen operations. That seems plausible because even offering a limited breakfast menu would likely slow down overall production, and the chain does not offer All-Day Breakfast in other markets.
McDonald's (MCD), however, has cited the same reason -- it complicates operations and slows down the kitchen -- as to why it stopped offering its popular Snack Wraps in the United States. The problem is that the chain still sells the Snack Wrap in Canada and has even recently refreshed and expanded the line.
Canada Never Lost the Snack Wrap
McDonald's dropped All-Day Breakfast in the US during the covid pandemic in an attempt to simplify its kitchen operations as delivery and takeout orders increased. The chain's Canada locations, at least some of them, offer a few all-day breakfast items, but not the mostly-full menu the chain once offered.
Simplifying operations to build digital sales -- specifically for delivery, drive-through and takeout orders -- has been a global priority for the chain. Despite that, McDonald's Canada remains committed to the Snack Wrap. The chain recently reiterated that in a recent press release.
McDonald's Canada is excited to announce the refreshed McWrap® and Chicken Snack Wrap lineup, featuring craveable flavours and made with quality fresh ingredients. Available today at participating restaurants, guests can choose between various flavours for lunch, dinner, or a convenient on-the-go snack to satisfy any craving. And, just in time for summer, McDonald’s Canada is reintroducing grilled chicken on the menu at participating restaurants, so guests can choose from crispy or grilled chicken in their McWrap or Chicken Snack Wrap for even more variety.
In addition to adding grilled chicken as a choice, McDonald's has also rolled out a number of new Snack Wrap options:
- Zesty Lime McWrap: Made with 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken topped with shredded lettuce, tortilla strips, sliced tomato, cucumbers, and cilantro lime sauce. All wrapped up in a soft white flour tortilla.
- Sweet Chili McWrap: Made with 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken topped with shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, cucumbers, mayo-style sauce, and sweet chili sauce. All wrapped up in a soft white flour tortilla.
- Chicken & Bacon McWrap: Made with 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken topped with shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, cucumbers, hickory-smoked bacon, and mayo-style sauce. All wrapped up in a soft white flour tortilla.
- Spicy Buffalo Chicken Snack Wrap: Made with 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken topped with shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, and spicy buffalo sauce wrapped in a soft white flour tortilla.
- Ranch Chicken Snack Wrap: Made with 100% Canadian-raised seasoned chicken topped with shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, and ranch sauce wrapped in a soft white flour tortilla.
McDonald's Has Trolled Its U.S. Customers
The fast-food chain is well aware of the fact that its US customers want the Snack Wrap to make a return. McDonald's acknowledged that in a grammatically poor Nov. 17 Twitter post about the difficulty of getting Taylor Swift tickets.
“Its easier to order snack wraps than it is to get these tickets,” the company shared.
Despite fan demand, McDonald's does not seem willing to return the item to its US menus.
"At this time, there are no plans to bring Snack Wraps back to nationwide menus in the U.S.,” the brand told Food Network in Nov. 2022. “Snack Wraps were removed from our national menus several years ago, at which point local markets and restaurants could decide to offer them locally based on customer preferences. In June 2020, Snack Wraps were phased out as a local offering.”
