The Maytag Washing Machine company has a strong pedigree, founded in 1893 and bought by the highly reputable and household brand Whirlpool Corporation in 2006. With such a prestigious history in washing machines it's no surprise that Maytag products frequently appear in our best washing machines buying guide.

In this review we take a closer look at the advantages and drawbacks of the mid-range Maytag MVW6200KW to see if it's one you should consider if you're in the market for a new washing machine.

Maytag MVW6200KW: Design

The Maytag MVW6200KW is only available in white for a clean and minimalist aesthetic and would be perfectly paired with a matching Maytag dryer. In this setup you could use the 30 min Quick Wash cycle on the MVW6200KW and Quick Dry cycle on a matching Maytag dryer to clean and dry clothes very quickly.

The control panel is sleek and simple making it easy to use and choose one of its 10 different cycle modes using the control wheel. You can also set Deep Fill or Quick Wash options.

Unboxed, it has dimensions of 57.5x27.5x27.5” so be sure to measure your space will be able to accommodate it before parting with your money. Also featured is a glass lid which gives it a more premium feel and you can check on your washing throughout the cycle. The glass lid also has a slow-close mechanism so that it doesn't slam shut, which is a nice touch.

Maytag MVW6200KW: Features

The Maytag MVW6200KW has a solid spec sheet full of handy features, though one notable omission is any Wi-Fi or Smart options that you might find going up the Maytag or Whirlpool ranges. If you're not phased by missing out on smart features and operating your washing machine remotely through an app then the MVW6200KW would be a great budget option that could save you a good chunk of change.

Topping the features list is the large 4.8 cu ft drum capacity, ideal for large families where you need to get lots washed frequently from muddy soccer kits to towels and bedding and everything in-between.

It also has a Quick Wash cycle which is ideal for lightly soiled clothing. This takes just 30 minutes to complete and makes it possible to wash your favourite garments in a hurry when you plan to wear them later on that day.

The Maytag MVW6200KW features a drawer dispenser that Maytag claim "delivers powerful cleaning, attacking everyday tough soils early in the cycle, by mixing detergent—liquid or powder—with water then dispersing thoroughly throughout the load."

The water level can also be changed using the Deep fill option. The extra water is ideal for heavily soiled items that would benefit from a deeper soaking to break down dirt and stains. For less dirty items you can switch it off to use less water and save some money.

One possible downside is that this model doesn't feature an agitator. The benefit of this omission is that you can fit larger items into the drum without a central column getting in the way. But the downside is there's no central spindle to 'agitate' and rub the clothes to help break down soils more effectively. Some customers noted that due to the lack of an agitator clothing sometimes also came out a bit wrinkled.

While no agitator is featured, it does boast a Power Impeller which Maytag claims "keeps clothes saturated with water and concentrated detergent during the cycle to deliver powerful cleaning."

Advanced Vibration Control is also boasted, with Maytag stating "The powerful shock absorbers and springs of Advanced Vibration Control™ reduce vibration to help keep disruptive noise to a minimum, load after load." We found numerous reviews from happy customers saying that the Maytag MVW6200KW was pleasantly quiet.

Maytag MVW6200KW: Price and availability

The Maytag MVW6200KW has an RRP of $949, though at the time of review was reduced down to $699 on the Maytag official site. Some big suppliers such as Best Buy were out of stock, though smaller outlets and Maytag's website had the machine in stock and ready for purchase.

One nice addition with this model is you get a 10-year limited warranty on the drive motor and stainless steel wash basket.

Maytag MVW6200KW: User reviews

The Maytag MVW6200KW has a solid score of 4 out of 5 stars from over 4,000 reviews on the official Maytag website.

One customer gave high praise and a five star review saying, " “I’ve only had my new washer for about 10 days, but so far I’m very happy. My last washer (a different brand) only lasted 5 years, so I bought a Maytag for the dependability. I have a Maytag dryer that is 20 years old and still going. I’m hoping this new washer will give me the same good service. My only complaint is that without an agitator the clothes seem more likely to twist together. I had a shirt today that came out full of wrinkles for that reason. All in all, my clothes are coming out clean and I love my new washer! I also love that it’s made in the USA and even in my own state!”

Another happy customer left five star feedback saying, "I bought this in January and love it!! Very quiet and efficient. First time I have had a top loader in 20+ years. I'm glad I bought it!”

As always with a large number of user reviews you can expect there to be some negative comments too. One unhappy customer gave two stars and had this to say, “I have had this machine for over 2 years. Wish it had an agitator. Clothes do not always get cleaned. No manual on internet for troubleshooting problems. Had to wait three weeks for a service person.”

Maytag MVW6200KW: Expert reviews

Sarah Armstrong, New Product Brand Manager for Maytag had the following to say about the  MVW6200KW, “This top load washer helps tackle everyday tough loads by adding more water on select cycles. It allows you to fill the wash basket with your choice of deeper water levels for more water when you want it. The extra water works with robust wash action to effectively break down and rinse away everyday tough messes. When you want a load done fast, use the Quick Wash cycle to clean small, lightly soiled loads in 30 minutes.”

Should you buy the Maytag MVW6200KW?

The Maytag MVW6200KW was named our best budget washing machine in our best washing machines buying guide. It's competitively priced at $949, though we recommend waiting to find it on sale at around the $699 mark. While it doesn't boast any smart capabilities or Wi-Fi, if you don't need to control your washing machine or check on the progress of your washes through an app the Maytag MVW6200KW will serve you well.

It has a simple utilitarian and minimal design, is easy to use, has a decent number of 10 cycles to choose from with quick wash and deep fill options and a large 4.8 cu. ft capacity making it ideal for big families.

The main criticism customers left online in reviews was the lack of an agitator and also it doesn't have an Energy Star certification, so you may find that it's a bit power hungry. However, if you like the sound of all of the other features, as well as its budget-friendly price and 10-year limited warranty then the Maytag MVW6200KW would be a solid option to go for.

How does the Maytag MVW6200KW compare to competitors?

The Samsung WF42H5000AW was rated our best front loading washing machine and can be picked up for a similar price with an RRP of $700, though has been known to drop down to around $600 on sale, so there's potentially some savings to be had. It is however a front-loading design with a smaller 4.2 cu. ft capacity and two fewer cycle modes to choose from with only eight options. Unlike the Maytag, it does have an Energy Star certification - so you can rely on it being economical.

The Maytag MVW6500MBK is a more premium model, with an RRP of $1,299, though you can usually find it discounted down to around $999, which is still considerably more than the Maytag MVW6200KW. The Maytag MVW6500MBK was named our best choice for households with pets as it has specific features targeted towards pet owners, including its Pet Pro system and a pet hair removal filter. So if you're a dog or cat lover it could be worth spending the extra money on this model instead.

The LG WM9500HKA was named our best large capacity washing machine with a 20% larger drum capacity at 5.8 cu. ft and is Energy Star certified for lower energy consumption. It is however a front-load design and you'll need deep pockets to fork out for its high $2,000 asking price.
