A German major has declared a total ban on cacti from all municipal buildings after a man suffered an "ugly injury" from one of the spiky plants inside a school.

The unusual decision comes after an adult required medical attention for an injury inflicted by contact with a cactus.

"What was an injury to the adult man's arm could easily have been a serious injury to the face for a small child in the same place," council announced to local media in Plettenberg, Germany, according to SkyNews.

Plettenberg mayor Ulrich Schulte addressed workers in a letter obtained by SkyNews announcing that "all official and private cacti must be removed from municipal buildings immediately," on account of the risk of "ugly injuries."

"Even if this order seems adventurous, excessive, superfluous or ridiculous to some employees," Schulte wrote, "It has a serious background in terms of protecting the health of all employees and especially children in schools and daycare centres."

A spokesperson for the mayor's council provided an update to local media, confirming the town has "successfully implemented the cactus ban."
