Maya Jama 'quits huge BBC show' after making history with Love Island gig

Maya Jama has quit one of her biggest presenting gigs, it's been reported.

Amid the new Love Island presenter, 28, wowing ITV2 viewers and making history with the popular reality TV show, Maya has reportedly stepped back from one of her old jobs with rival channel BBC Three.

The former Radio 1 DJ cemented her status as a Love Island legend over the weekend, just one week on from appearing on the show for the first time, as broke a record while hosting Aftersun for the first time.

More viewers tuned in to Love Island's spin-off programme on Sunday night than the main show as admirers of the Bristol-born star were buzzed to see the new host present the live show for the very first time.

Early ratings show Sunday night's main episode of the ITV2 dating show was watched by a peak 1.51million viewers.

However, a whopping 1.82million tuned in to the Sunday spin-off, which shows a lot more of Maya's personality and natural presenting skills.

While viewers are loving seeing Maya on TV, fans may be disappointed to learn the popular star has quit as host of BBC Three series Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star.

The Love Island presenter took over hosting duties from Stacey Dooley for its third series in 2021, and returned to watch make-up artists battle it out for the fourth series of the reality TV show last year.

But insiders have now revealed Maya won't be signing up for a third stint hosting the show, The Sun reports.

The Mirror have approached Maya's representative and BBC Three for comment on this story.

Speaking earlier this month, Maya spoke of the importance of seeing more women of colour on TV screens as she became the first non-white Love Island presenter.

"Growing up, I never saw an East African woman host a show, and no Black or mixed-race woman hosts such a big primetime TV show, other than June Sarpong," she recalled to Vogue.

"This is definitely a big moment for all of us in that sense, and I hope it just opens way more doors for other people from similar backgrounds and cultures as myself."

She went on to add: "I’m super grateful for all of those people that were screaming my name on Twitter over those years – that is literally the reason I’m here.

"I just want to be what they want me to be. I hope I do everyone justice."

Maya is certainly doing the show justice - with fans constantly praising the star's hosting skills online.

"Maya Jama’s slow-mo walk is IMMACULATE caroline would be so proud it’s giving main tv presenter girl #loveisland," one fan wrote on Twitter as the presenter made her Love Island debut.

Another added: "Shamelessly watching Love Island only because Maya Jama is hosting."
