MIAMI - For many Latinos, May 4 might seem like just another day leading up to Cinco de Mayo. However, for sci-fi enthusiasts Latino and not it marks an exciting celebration—Star Wars Day. So if you hear someone greet you with "Happy May the 4th," don't be taken aback. This clever play on words connects "May the Fourth" with the iconic Jedi phrase "May the Force be with you."
But beyond the passion for the universe created by George Lucas, there is an indisputable fact. No other large movie or TV franchise has included as many Latino actors and talent behind the camera as Star Wars.
From the first three movies, with Boricua actor Jimmi Smits portraying Senator Bail Organa in multiple films, to the upcoming new series "The Acolyte" on Disney+, Latinos have always been part of Star Wars, or 'Estar Guars,' as Oscar Isaac (who plays Poe Dameron) likes to call it.
Benicio del Toro, John Leguizamo, Lupita Nyong'o, Freddy Prince Jr., Verónica Segura, Danny Trejo, Myrna García Velasco, and more Latino actors have all been part of Star Wars movies and series. Behind the camera, talent like directors Gabriel Osorio and Alonso Ruizpalacios have been involved in projects like "Star Wars: Visions" and "Andor," respectively, helping to shape the narrative and visual style of the Star Wars universe.
Of course, in recent years, Issac, Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal and Rosario Dawson have given even more diversity to the galaxy with high profile roles that are still active.
These contributions highlight the ongoing efforts to ensure that the Star Wars universe is reflective of its global fanbase, showcasing a variety of voices and perspectives that enrich the storytelling and create a more inclusive galaxy far, far away.
