Max Verstappen denied George Russell a practice clean sweep by pipping the British driver to top spot at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Russell, who was fastest in both sessions in Baku on Thursday, led the way in the concluding running prior to qualifying.
However, Verstappen moved to the summit after he saw off the Mercedes driver by just 0.099 seconds in the final minutes.
Lewis Hamilton finished third, just one tenth back, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli – playing catch-up after he was sidelined with mechanical gremlins on Thursday – was fourth.
Antonelli, who holds an 81-point lead over Russell in the title standings with nine scheduled rounds still remaining, finished 0.351 seconds down on Verstappen.
Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc set the fifth best time, a place clear of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norrish seventh and eighth respectively for McLaren.
Qualifying for Saturday’s race takes place at 1600 local time (1300BST).
