Highly-rated Motherwell teenager Max Johnston is set to join Cove Rangers on-loan.
Record Sport understands the up-and-coming 18-year-old is closing in on a short-term move north to Balmoral Stadium. Falkirk and Greenock Morton were also interested in recruiting Johnston, who has made two senior appearances for the Steelmen after emerging through their academy. He spent last season on-loan with Queen of the South in the Championship, working under his dad and former Scotland midfielder Allan Johnston.
But the youngster is now set to link-up with Cove boss Jim McIntyre as he attempts to kick-start their season. McIntyre's side have won just one of their six fixtures in the second-tier so far. The former Ross County and Dundee manager, who took over from Paul Hartley in June, is poised to add defensive re-enforcements with Fir Park prospect Johnston. He made 31 appearances in his spell with the Doonhamers, scoring three times in a struggling side.
