The summer transfer window does not even officially open for just over a week, but Sunday evening was perhaps the most typical Chelsea sort of night we've seen in a while.
At 9pm (UK time) on Sunday, the Blues were in pole position to sign Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte, despite Paris Saint-Germain also having a strong interest in the 22-year-old. And that wasn't all. As per our friends at the Mirror, Chelsea's offer to buy Ugarte included buying a stake in the Portuguese outfit, with Todd Boehly previously outlining his plans to adopt a multi-club model in football.
However, around 90 minutes later and all that was essentially gone. PSG, who have been neck and neck with Chelsea all along for Ugarte's signature, upped their offer for the Uruguay international. The Blues then pulled out of the bid for Ugarte as they were not willing to pay above what they estimated to be the market rate for the highly sought-after midfielder.
