Mauricio Pochettino: At Chelsea, we need to win today, not tomorrow

Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea are "building something special" but has warned they will need a period of stability before enjoying success again.

Pochettino insists he understands the pressure to deliver immediately this season and is confident he can bring the good times back to Stamford Bridge.

But, after a rocky first season under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake ownership, the Argentine says everyone at Chelsea must have complete faith during the ups and downs of their long-term rebuild.

Speaking at the end of their pre-season tour of America and a week before the start of the new Premier League season, Pochettino said: "You cannot win if you do not build.

"You can bring in names and players… there are some exceptions but in general all the clubs who win in the end… Liverpool won after many years working hard and being consistent, [Manchester] City the same after seven or eight years with Pep and Real Madrid also.

"That is important to understand, the clubs who win are the teams who are more consistent, working hard to make a plan to win. Our job is to provide the team with stability [during] ups and downs, to behave in the same way.

"We need to have a plan if we want to arrive there. If we arrive before, perfect. But, if not, we know we are going to arrive at our destination. That is so important. I know how difficult it is to build a squad to have the possibility to compete again with big sides. But we are building something special."

It has been a summer of huge change at Chelsea, with 12 players leaving.

They have brought in Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu and Axel Disasi but are still yet to sign the new midfielder that Pochettino made a priority when he took over.

They have seemingly made little progress in their move to sign Brighton's Moises Caicedo and are considering alternatives.

Brighton rejected an improved £80million bid for Caicedo last week, value him at more than £100m and are not willing to lower their price.

Paris Saint-Germain's Leandro Paredes, Ajax's Edson Alvarez, Leeds United's Tyler Adams and Everton's Amadou Onana are possible targets, along with a more attacking option in Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga.

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for £25m after today sealing a £39m deal for Monaco defender Disasi this morning, but Pochettino wants to add experience to his squad.

Pochettino could name one of the youngest Chelsea sides in Premier League history in their opening game against Liverpool next weekend and has warned the first few weeks of the season could be "tough", as he bids to instil his philosophy on a new-look team.

But he accepts Chelsea fans will not accept another season of struggle.

Pochettino said: "It is a process that needs time, but in football you can't ask for time. We know we need to deliver now. My message to everyone here is: 'We are at Chelsea and we need to win. Today, not tomorrow'."
