Fans have been offered a first look at Matthew Macfadyen as John le Carré’s cunning spymaster George Smiley, with the actor looking sharp in a black suit and thick spectacles.

The 51-year-old actor will star as the unassuming yet brilliant intelligence officer in the upcoming BBC television drama Legacy Of Spies, stepping into a character last portrayed on television during the 1990s.
