Mattel Is Being Sued After Accidentally Including A Link To A Porn Site On Wicked Doll Packaging

Remember that time toy company Mattel made a bit of a whoopsie by printing the link to a porn website on the packaging for the special edition Wicked dolls? For the adults amongst us, it was very funny. However, I’m sure the big dogs at Mattel aren’t laughing now that they’re being sued for the blunder.

South Carolina resident Holly Ricketson is launching a class action lawsuit after buying one of the dolls for her young daughter. Ricketson claimed her daughter visited the X-rated website printed on the packaging. According to court documents cited by Variety, the website had “nothing to do with the Wicked doll” and instead, linked to an explicit website full of adult content.

The plaintiff is alleging that she, along with her child, suffered “emotional distress” as a result of the misprint.

“These scenes were hardcore, full-on nude pornographic images depicting actual intercourse,” the lawsuit says, per Variety.

“Plaintiff’s minor daughter immediately showed her mother the photographs and both were horrified by what they saw. If the plaintiff had been aware of such an inappropriate defect in the product, she would not have purchased it.”

According to Reuters, the lawsuit accuses Mattel of negligence, selling products unfit for sale and violating consumer protection laws in California.

The class action is seeking $5 million USD ($7.7 million AUD) for anyone in the United States who has purchased the doll with the NSFW link.

Shortly after punters realised that the dolls had a spicy website — instead of the official movie’s website — printed on the packaging, Mattel pulled the toy from shelves from major American retailers.

In a statement to the Associated Press, the toy manufacturers said they were “made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls.”

“We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this,” the company said.

Mattell also instructed people who had purchased the dolls to either throw out the packaging or cover up the link.

Wicked hit cinemas on November 20 after a hell of a lot of anticipation and a lengthy press run by the stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Jeff Goldblum. Since it’s release, the film become the highest-grossing stage musical adapted into a musical film.

Not too shabby!
