Matt Little defeats five other candidates in the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District

Matt Little (D) defeated five other candidates in the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District on Aug. 11, 2026. Little, Kaela Berg (D), and Matt Klein (D) led in endorsements, fundraising, and media attention. Incumbent Rep. Angie Craig (D) ran for the U.S. Senate rather than for another term.

According to CBS Minnesota's Esme Murphy, the district "is a microcosm of the whole state. There are suburban areas, including Burnsville, Eagan and Cottage Grove, as well as rural farm areas in Dakota, Scott and Le Sueur counties. It is the most evenly divided district between Democrats and Republicans in the state."

Craig, who positioned herself as a moderate during her tenure, was first elected in 2018. Before then, Republicans represented the district for 20 years. The Minnesota Star Tribune's Sydney Kashiwagi wrote that these dynamics mean that Democrats needed to decide "whether to stay with the tried and true formula in Klein, a moderate aligned with Craig's formula for winning the seat; or take a chance on the more progressive Little or Berg."
