Matt Hancock has defended only giving 3% of his I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! fee to charity. The former Health Secretary said he decided to appear on the TV show in order to raise awareness for dyslexia.
But despite earning a staggering £320,000 for appearing on the reality TV show, Mr Hancock only donated £10,000 to charity. His appearance on the show caused controversy as he was still a sitting MP when he decided to go on the ITV show.
But appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain this morning (January 31) he defended his decision to go on the show. He said the £10,000 donation was "substantial".
He said: “I did absolutely give some of the money to charity. I didn’t primarily do it (go on the reality show) for the money, I primarily did it to try to show who I am.”
He insisted the £10,000 donation was a "decent sum" and was "more than my MPs salary". While in the jungle Mr Hancock continued to receive his MP's salary which was £84,144.
He did admit that before he appeared on the show there had been a "discussion and negotiation over the fee”.
