Matt Hancock confirms he will be taking five Ukrainians into his home

Tuesday's instalment of Good Morning Britain saw former health secretary Matt Hancock tell viewers he would house a family of "around five" Ukrainian refugees.

Mr Hancock appeared on the ITV show to discuss the Homes for Ukraine "visa sponsorship scheme" which will allow British households to open their doors to those fleeing the Russian invasion. The Conservative MP said he will put up a family in his constituency home and said his children are "very enthusiastic" about it.

He told GMB hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid he has known and been speaking with the family for some time. When asked by Richard how many refugees he potentially be giving a home to, Mr Hancock hesitated before saying: "One family."

When Richard then asked for a number, he paused, then replied: "Around five." He then added: [It will be] in my constituency home. I live both there and in London, so I'm not there all of the time. As an MP you obviously live in the constituency and have a flat in London." Richard then turned to the "elephant in the room".

He asked Mr Hancock: "There are many critics and cynics at home who will be thinking... you're just doing this to try and rebuild your reputation after a political fall. What would you say to those people?"

The West Suffolk MP quickly said: "This is the opposite, this actually arose from my constituency work, which I love doing, which most MPs love doing. "I was on Radio Suffolk to discuss the scheme and I was asked outright if I would take in refugees, and I gave my honest answer, which was 'yes'.

"I hope by being on here I can help one other person put themselves forward to do the same."
