Matt Fitzpatrick What's In The Bag?
Matt Fitzpatrick was a perennial winner on the DP World Tour before making the move to the PGA Tour and elevating himself into one of the world's best players. He has two wins across the pond including the 2022 US Open and he's a key member of the European Ryder Cup team.
Fitzpatrick is a free agent in the golf equipment sphere and therefore can choose exactly what product is going to be in his back and suit his game the best. As such there are a few brands represented in his setup. Let's take a look at what's in the bag of Matt Fitzpatrick.
Driver
What Driver does Matt Fitzpatrick use?
Fitzpatrick's driver situation changed in 2021 as he got rid of the TaylorMade M2 which had been part of his setup for many years, replacing it with a Titleist TSi3 driver. He also made some subtle swing changes which, along with newer equipment, has allowed him to gain more distance. For example he has a slightly wider stance which allows him use the ground more, and he has started flaring his front foot so it’s pointing more towards his target (which in turn allows him to release his hips more on the downswing). Fitzpatrick has also worked with the Stack Golf system - a training aid designed to help golfers gain swing speed through a series of over speed training.
Earlier in the year at the BMW Championship in Colorado, Fitzpatrick's driver actually cracked while playing the final round but he has since replaced it with a new TSi3 head. Speaking to Golf Monthly , the Englishman said "I have back up heads both on the tour truck in Europe and the US, as well as some at my home in the US as well". It looks as though Matt doesn't plan on changing out of this driver any time soon.
For a long time Fitzpatrick had played a Graphite Design shaft in his driver but switched into the counterbalance Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei AV Raw Orange 65 TX shaft which is ideal for golfers like himself who load the shaft aggressively in transition.
While there are new Titleist driver models on the market, this is very much a case of "if it isn't broke, don't try and fix it". The TSi3 is still one the best Titleist drivers, and is still a match for any of the best drivers out there currently.
Fairways
What Fairway Wood does Matt Fitzpatrick use?
Moving to the fairway woods, Fitzpatrick once again carries an older Titleist fairway wood model - the Tsi2. This fairway wood boasts a larger footprint than the Tsi3 fairway wood and therefore is naturally more forgiving. It proved to be very consistent with launch and spin during out testing. Fitzpatrick powers his Titleist Tsi2 fairway wood with the same Tensei Orange shaft found in his driver. He plays this fairway wood in the B1 setting on the hosel which is standard loft but a touch flatter lie angle than standard.
To round off his metal woods, the Englishman uses a Titleist TSR2 hybrid lofted down a little. He previously has gamed a 7-wood which was a constant in his bag but recently switched into the hybrid and he claims his stats have proven it was the right move for him.
Irons
What Irons does Matt Fitzpatrick Use?
Despite being a free agent with the flexibility to use whatever clubs he likes, Fitzpatrick has been using Ping irons since turning professional and once again he is not afraid to use something that isn’t exactly hot off the shelves. ‘Fitz’ plays with a set of Ping S55 irons from five-iron down to pitching wedge. His four-iron has recently changed though from a Titleist T100 to a Ping i210 model.
The S55's have been out since 2015 and despite briefly testing a set of the Ping Blueprint's Fitzpatrick has shown no desire to switch. They are an iron best suited to more accomplished players looking for a compact set that also features more forgiveness than you might expect from the blade-like design. All of his irons are fitted with Ping CFS X (115G) shafts.
When we tested these irons (many moons ago!) they were a pleasure to use, very workable and easy to shape both ways. The look from all angles was very pleasing, and we were impressed with the finish.
Wedges
What Wedges does Matt Fitzpatrick use?
The Sheffield born major champion carries four wedges including two of the extremely popular Titleist Vokey SM9’s. He carries four Titleist Vokey wedges, two of which are SM9 models - the 46 and 52 degree options. He then makes the move to the more current Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges in 56° and 60°. The SM10 is a case of evolution rather than revolution from the SM9 but Titleist says it has developed the groundbreaking Progressive Centre of Gravity (CG) design to improve distance and trajectory control.
In testing, we found both the SM10 and the SM9 wedges very easy to square-up on full shots and deliver excellent consistency of spin and flight from closer to the green. The SM10 wedges are widely known as some of the best wedges on the market but also one of the best wedges for chipping.
Putter
What Putter does Matt Fitzpatrick use?
When he’s on his game Fitzpatrick is one of the best putters in the world. For a long time his putter was a Yes! Tracy II but at the end of 2020 he signed a putter contract with Bettinardi and now plays a DASS BB1 Fitz prototype made by them. The BB1 is one of the best Bettinardi putters and is a blade design suited to the more skilled player. What is interesting is the Bettinardi is pretty much a carbon copy of the Yes! model, aside from the Sheffield United stamping and branding touches.
When Joe Ferguson spoke to Matt about his switch to this new putter he said "I'd bought numerous Yes putters online but my putting coach Phil Kenyon actually noticed the backline actually pointed slightly to the right. I would line the putter up and the face would aim left, so I would hit good putts but they would miss left.
Bettinardi got in touch with my dad quite a few years ago now, about seven or eight years that relationship has been going for and eventually they went at it for me and did a great job"
Ball
What Golf Ball does Matt Fitzpatrick use?
Fitzpatrick is one of many tour pros who uses the iconic Titleist Pro V1x, one of the best golf balls on the market. While he momentarily switched into the 2021 Pro V1x, Matt reverted back to the ball that he'd seen a lot of success with which was the 2019 Pro V1x. Players will use older balls if they have seen success with these balls or like the spin or launch it produces. This is a ball that received five stars in our review and it is an excellent all-rounder, as you would expect. We were particularly impressed by the improved ball flight in the long game which didn’t come at the cost of any short game control or feel.
Apparel/Shoes
What Shoes does Matt Fitzpatrick wear?
A lot has changed for Fitzpatrick in the apparel and shoe department recently. Having previously worn Under Armour, in 2022 he was then wearing Castore apparel but this appears to have changed again. At the Sentry Tournament of Champions he was wearing Greyson clothing but we are yet to confirm if this is an official partnership. Fitzpatrick then uses Skechers golf shoes.
His model of choice was the Skechers Pro 5 Hyper shoe which is a technology packed spiked golf shoe that delivers on Skechers renowned comfort thanks to some excellent proprietary technology. Recently however, we have spotted him in the Skechers Go Golf Blade shoe, which must be one of the best Skechers golf shoes if they're being worn on tour.
