The New York Giants are unlikely to select a quarterback with either of their two first-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft, but never say never.
General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll seem firmly committed to Daniel Jones, but they’re also very open to increasing competition. And they’ve acknowledged that improving the situation behind Jones will be a necessity this offseason.
Accordingly, the Giants will do their due diligence and dig around quarterbacks prospects and potential free agents. In fact, they’ve already begun to do exactly that.
Schoen and Daboll have held informal meetings with several quarterback prospects at the 2022 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, including Matt Corral of Ole Miss.
“Yeah, I had an informal with the Giants (on Tuesday), just talking Xs and Os, them trying to see how much knowledge I have of it,” Corral said during his media availability. “It went really well, I think.”
Corral is not exactly a stranger to the Giants. He’s hovered around their gravitational pull in a “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” sort of way thanks to his relationship with Eli Manning and the Manning family.
“My relationship with Eli, I actually hung out with his family quite a bit, towards the beginning of my career at Ole Miss and toward the end when Arch was visiting and all that,” Corral said. “I was a big part of that, just being around and being around the family, being around Cooper a lot, honestly. The time I had with them that the school recorded us, that was kind of a surprise. I had no idea he was going to be there, so that took me by surprise. It was just really cool to be around a legend like that.”
In addition to the time he’s spent with the Mannings on campus at Ole Miss, Corral has also worked alongside Eli at the Manning Passing Academy.

The Giants do have an impressive history with Ole Miss quarterbacks, but that won’t necessarily set the stage for Corral. Nor will his relationship with the Mannings.
Although the Giants themselves have an extra “in” with Corral thanks to the Mannings, that family is also very familiar with and close to Daniel Jones — who played under David Cutcliffe at Duke and was also a regular at the Manning Passing Academy.
