Porto has been waiting for this house. Not another tasting room pretending to history, nor a mere gift shop for tourists collecting souvenirs, but a living townhouse which remembers a family who helped shape the port. The Symingtons: five generations deep, half-British, half-Portuguese, and bound to the mighty Douro by choice rather than obligation. The Symingtons have opened Matriarca, a three-storey testament to wine and conversation and dedicated to the woman who began their story.
Beatriz Leitão Carvalhosa Atkinson married Andrew James Symington in the late nineteenth-century, joining Lisbon’s light with Scotland’s pragmatism. She could balance a ledger, charm a bishop, and outpour any visiting merchant. When she died, her house did not fall silent. Her way of bringing people together endured and is woven into every bottle which now bears the family name.
