Matildas hero Raso scores first Real Madrid goal

Matildas star Hayley Raso continues to write herself into the history books, becoming the first Australian to score a goal for Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old was on the scoresheet in the 5-1 home win against Real Betis on Thursday morning (AEDT), helping her side to the top of the Liga F table.

Athenea del Castillo cleverly passed to an unmarked Raso in the box, before the Australian cooly tapped the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper and into the net for their second goal of the contest and first of the second half.

The fifth Australian woman to play in Spain's most elite league competition, Raso is also the first-ever Australian to play for Real Madrid.

The winger was signed by the Spanish giants after her contract at English club Manchester City ended in June.

"It's a club that people look at and know the history of it, so to be able to be part of it is just so exciting for me," Raso said at the time of her signing.

"Real Madrid are a team that are pushing in the league, they are playing in the Champions League, so for me, it's about coming into this team, challenging myself.

"We want to win, I want to win - I'm determined to win - so to be able to be at a club that's pushing for those things is what I'm most looking forward to."

Raso made her Liga F debut in September, playing in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Valencia, and has featured in every match of the season so far.

Real Madrid sit on top of the ladder with nine points, above city rivals Atletico (seven), while defending champions Barcelona (six) are fourth ahead of their match with Valencia on Friday morning (AEDT).
