One of Roald Dahl’s most beloved books is getting another adaptation just in time for Christmas, as Matilda the Musical comes to Netflix. The films is based on both the Roald Dahl classic and its Olivier and Tony award-winning musical adaptation from Australian actor-comedian Tim Minchin – who also wrote the music and lyrics for this new iteration.
It is closely tied to Matilda the Musical’s original 2011 West End production, with the show’s original director Matthew Warchus also returning alongside Minchin. This is the second film adaptation of Matilda, after the iconic 1996 version directed by and starring Danny DeVito, and promises to be another heartwarming and fantastical film perfect for the festive season.

What is it about?
Matilda the Musical tells the classic tale of Matilda Wormwood, a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination. Her parents are content with trash TV and dodgy money-making schemes, while Matilda loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books.
Where they are loud, selfish and unkind, she is a quiet observer, thinking up small and cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge. On meeting her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey, Matilda is encouraged and begins conjuring her own fantastical tales.

Excited to attend a new school, Crunchem Hall, Matilda is surprised to find it is an ominous and oppressive place led by the villainous Miss Trunchbull. As well as kind Miss Honey, the bright lights at Crunchem are story-loving librarian Mrs Phelps, and Matilda’s new school friends.
Filled with an overwhelming sense of justice, Matilda takes a stand for what is right and dares to teach Trunchbull a lesson she will never forget.
Who are the cast?
Matilda the Musical boasts a cast of respected British actors, with the notorious Miss Trunchbull played by unrecognisable Oscar winner Emma Thompson, who portrays the tyrannical headmistress with the help of some impressive prosthetics. Matilda’s parents are played by This is England star Stephen Graham and Oblivion actress Andrea Riseborough.
Matilda’s kind-hearted teacher Miss Honey is played by Lashana Lynch, best known as James Bond’s replacement as 007 in 2021’s No Time to Die. Crunchem’s librarian Mrs Phelps is played by Indian actress and comedian Sindhu Vee, who Sex Education fans may recognise from her supporting role as Olivia’s mother.
Finally, the titular role of young Matilda is played by Irish actress Alisha Weir. Speaking to Netflix, the 13-year-old said she “burst into tears” after landing the role, in what is just her third feature film.

Matilda the Musical is available to stream on Netflix from Christmas Day, December 25.
