Mateo Cassierra in Rangers transfer claim as Sochi striker talks up Gio van Bronckhorst connection

Striker Mateo Cassierra has stated he's on Gio van Bronckhorst 's radar as Rangers consider a move for the Colombian.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Ibrox after impressing for Sochi in the Russian top flight.

The frontman netted 14 goals in 22 league starts and was second top scorer in the country.

He reckons he is on Van Bronckhorst's mind this summer from his days as Feyenoord boss, while Cassierra was leading the line for Ajax before a move to the Russia Premier League.

Cedric Itten is the first to leave this summer and the Dutchman will be looking for reinforcements up front as he looks to reclaim the Scottish Premiership trophy.

Cassierra has a year left on his deal but is keen to leave Russia amid the ongoing war with Ukraine.

And in a radio interview in Colombia. he was asked directly about whether he will sign for Rangers.

He said: "I hope within the next week or so, my future will be confirmed and I will sign for a club who are good for me.

"My priority is to stay in Europe because I have been here for five years now.

"The manager of Rangers knows me because when I was at Ajax, he was the manager of Feyenoord.

"So there are options for me that need to be evaluated."

Sochi manager Vladimir Fedotov stated last week he expects Cassierra to leave the club.

He said: "He has a contract here for another year, but we understand that the world is changeable and very mobile, everything is possible.

"This is an important time for Mateo.

"The guy loves what he does and works selflessly in training. He is professional and disciplined. Most importantly, he has a desire not to stop there, and we will help him in this."
