Matalan makes huge change to its checkouts - and shoppers aren’t impressed

Matalan shoppers have been left unimpressed after being told they must remove their own security tags at self-service checkouts.

Instead of asking a member of staff to remove the anti-theft devices, customers are instructed to remove them themselves.

However, shoppers have said the system is likely to encourage thieves, reports The Sun.

Matalan first introduced the change during lockdown.

A giant round magnet is installed on the tills with a sign that reads: “Remove security tags here.”

The electronic tags and metal pins that hold them in place must then be dropped into a hole so they can be disposed of.

The purpose of security tags is that they cause a loud sound if someone exits the shop with one still attached to a product.

One customer said: “Why on earth would Matalan want customers to remove their own security tags?

“Doesn’t this completely defeat the point of having security tags on clothes?!”

A second wrote on Twitter : “I am fed up of having to be my own cashier, in Matalan you have to take the security tags off yourself. FFS!

“Next time I will go next door to Primark. They pack it for you as well.”

Another customer said: “It appears Matalan now have self service checkouts complete with magnetic tag remover for convenient shoplifting.”

Others said the system could be bad news for elderly shoppers.

One person said: “Can't be great for elderly customers who struggle removing the security tags, it sometimes takes the staff a couple of goes and they must do hundreds over the working week.”

As well as removing their own security tags, customers must also get rid of any unwanted coat hangers in a slot.

Matalan declined to comment.

The high street giant recently found itself in hot water over a Jubliee dress.

The clothing giant has been praised by shoppers for its "pretty" £20 garment which had proved popular with shoppers.

After launching their Union Jack dress, the clothing retailer shared a picture of the dress, writing: "Jubilee weekend is around the corner and this [is] the perfect garden party dress Shop the £20 dress."

But shoppers were left disappointed after it sold out quickly.
