Masters Football to return in Glasgow after 11-year hiatus featuring Celtic and Rangers legends

Masters Football is set to return this year following an 11-year hiatus, with Celtic and Rangers legends set to make an appearance.

The popular six-a-side tournament was last shown in 2011 on Sky Sports, where it was routinely broadcast throughout the 2000s, but will be screened by the newly launched sports documentary streaming service 360 Sports TV when it returns in July.

The nostalgic event sees retired players over the age of 35 compete — allowing supporters to see their old players pull on the shirt again for small sided, quick-paced games.

As reported by Football Scotland, the first event — which will be held at the Braehead Arena on July 8 — will feature only four teams: the Old Firm as well as Manchester United and Liverpool.

They will battle it out in a round-robin style group stage before the top two face off in an overall final.

The tournament is being organised by 360 Sports Television, which has been set up by Celtic legend Martin O’Neill and former Nottingham Forest teammate Tony Woodcock.

Brighton star Adam Lallana is also involved in the venture, while icons such as Paul Scholes and Steve McManaman are set to be involved too.

It’s unclear which former Celtic and Rangers stars will take part but it’s believed they will be part of the event.

Woodcock told Sports Bible: “It just feels fantastic to bring Masters Football back to life.

"It has real history and there’s been a tremendous buzz over social media recently with petitions to revive the tournament.

"I played in the first ever series of Masters Football which immediately caught the attention of fans up and down the country who delighted in watching their heroes from the past showing off their skills once again.

“Now I'm so thrilled to be playing a part in bringing this iconic tournament back to the viewing public with live coverage of this brand-new event on www.360sportstelevision.com"

There was a similar event that took place in Glasgow in 2019 when international teams competed in the star sixes, with the likes of Barry Ferguson, Jackie McNamara and James McFadden playing for Scotland.
