Massive ‘extinct’ Wendy’s burger returns. It began as a joke and is reportedly now available at only one Oklahoma location

The Wendy’s T-Rex Burger has reportedly returned, more than a decade after the nine-patty sandwich disappeared from the chain’s public menu. This time, the burger is reportedly being offered as a limited-time eating challenge at a Wendy’s franchise in Edmond, Oklahoma.

The promotion surfaced online after a Wendy’s customer posted a photo of a restaurant advertisement on Reddit on Aug. 31, 2026. According to the image, the challenge features a T-Rex Burger with nine beef patties and nine slices of cheese. The sandwich also comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, ketchup, and mayonnaise.

The advertised package costs $29.99 and includes fries, a drink, and an “I Survived the T-Rex Burger” T-shirt, according to the promotional material. Customers who finish the burger inside the restaurant within nine minutes can also receive an additional special prize. The nature of that prize has not been publicly disclosed.

The burger’s history is almost as unusual as its current comeback.

The T-Rex Burger originated as a fictional creation in a tongue-in-cheek Sports Illustrated advertisement around 2004. The advertisement depicted a massive burger containing nine beef patties and nine slices of cheese. According to ABC News’ 2013 report, a Wendy’s representative said the original T-Rex Burger concept appeared in a Sports Illustrated advertisement as a joke and was not an actual Wendy’s menu item.

Customers nevertheless began asking Wendy’s restaurants to make it. In 2013, Barb Barker, an administrative office manager for the ownership group behind the Brandon restaurant, told ABC News that customers requested the burger after seeing the Sports Illustrated advertisement, and the restaurant decided to accommodate them.

The Brandon restaurant reportedly sold two or three T-Rex Burgers a day at the time, with nine quarter-pound beef patties, nine slices of cheese, and traditional burger toppings. A photograph of the Canadian burger appeared on Reddit in June 2013, and the image quickly attracted wider attention.

Wendy’s corporate headquarters subsequently asked the Brandon franchise to remove the burger image and stop offering the item. A U.S. Wendy’s spokesperson told ABC News at the time that the T-Rex Burger was not an official Wendy’s menu item. The Brandon franchise also explained its position in 2013, saying it did not “condone or promote” someone consuming nine meat patties in one sitting.

Wendy’s has not publicly announced a nationwide return of the T-Rex Burger. It remains unclear whether the T-Rex Burger will remain exclusive to the Edmond location or expand to other Wendy’s restaurants.

Recent Wendy’s promotions have yielded mixed results. A Tennessee man also recently shared on Reddit that he cashed in his Wendy’s loyalty points for a burger, but he was disappointed in its quality when it arrived.
