Massive blaze sends thick plumes of black smoke billowing into Glasgow sky as fire crews race to scene

Pictures from the scene at a large fire in the Govan area of Glasgow show thick, black clouds of smoke billowing into the air. Emergency services were called to the scene on Renfrew Road shortly after 5.20pm on Thursday, July 14.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have raced to the scene and remain in attendance with three appliances tackling the flames. Glasgow Live reports that the blaze is understood to have started at the John R Adam metal scrapyard.

It is understood that a giant rubbish pile caught fire, however it is not yet known what sparked it. Local reports claim there has been a knock on effect on passing traffic as a result of the ongoing incident.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We were called to the scene on Renfrew Road in Glasgow at 5.23pm. Three appliances are currently in attendance. A large pile of rubbish measuring 20 metres by 50 metres caught fire. There is heavy smoke in the area.".

It is not known whether anyone has been injured.
