Massachusetts mother convicted of murdering her 2 young sons is sentenced to life in prison

BOSTON — A Brockton mother who was convicted of murdering her two young sons has been sentenced to life in prison, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

Latarsha Sanders, 48, stabbed her two young sons to death in 2018, and the killings were part of a ritualistic incident, she told police at the time.

On Wednesday in Plymouth Superior Court, Sanders was sentenced to serve two mandatory life terms without the possibility of parole in the deaths of her sons Edson “Marlon” Brito, 8, and La’son Brito, 5.

Judge William Sullivan also sentenced Sanders to serve nine to 10 years in state prison, to run concurrently, on a charge of witness intimidation.

“These two young boys were innocent babies with their lives ahead of them,” Plymouth DA Timothy Cruz said. “This was an emotional and difficult case for all of the family members involved. There were no winners in the courtroom today.”

Brockton Police responded to a 911 call for a medical emergency at 247 Prospect St., on Feb. 5, 2018.

First responders found Sanders outside the apartment, distraught and combative. EMS transported Sanders for medical evaluation, and Brockton Police entered her third-floor apartment — where they found the two boys wrapped in bedding.

The children had been stabbed multiple times, and were determined to be dead at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner concluded that it was a homicide, and the cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

Investigators interviewed people associated with the victims, and Sanders told investigators that the killings were part of a ritualistic incident.

She cleaned up the children, placed them in beds, and mopped up the crime scene. The mother never sought medical attention for the boys.

Massachusetts State Police found a kitchen knife left in the sink, which police determined was the murder weapon.
