Mason Mount tipped for Newcastle United move as Chelsea contract talks stall

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Mason Mount would “fit really well” at Newcastle United. Midfield has been an area of contention in recent times, with Eddie Howe short of options following Jonjo Shelvey’s exit.

Joelinton, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes are the only first-team options and, as Newcastle play 4-3-3, that leaves them light. Two bids for James Maddison were rejected last summer and the Magpies are linked with another approach at the end of the campaign.

Reports have also suggested another England international, Mount, could arrive at St James’ Park. Like Maddison, he also has less than 18 months on his current contract - sparking rumours of a possible exit.

A turbulent start to Chelsea’s life under new ownership has seen a Todd Boehl-led board spend around £600million on new arrivals in eight months. The volatile transfer activity has cast Mount’s future into doubt, with competition for first-team opportunities stiff.

Newcastle could offer an escape route for the 24-year-old while also providing an ambitious footballing project. Speaking to talkSPORT, ex-Blues striker Cascarino insisted a move for Mount would suit both parties.

“He’ll have interest from clubs without a doubt,” he said. “It comes down to Mason. If he wants to stay at Chelsea, sit on the money and find himself in and out of the team, does that sit well with him? Probably not.

“I’m not sure where he’d play at Liverpool. Will it be at the top of the three behind the centre-forward? He won’t play on the right because that’s Salah. Diaz will come back so it won’t be on the left. In central attacking midfield, they did have Oxlade-Chamberlain to fill that role, but he didn’t really achieve that because he had big injuries. That’s the only way I see him.

“I think he’d do really well in that role. Mason Mount will have more than Liverpool chasing him, a number of clubs will be interested. If you were Newcastle would you be interested in taking him? If you want to become more of a Champions League team I think Mason Mount will fit really well in the way Newcastle play.”
