Gareth Southgate announced his 26-man England squad for the 2022 World Cup on Thursday which included Chelsea midfielders Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher. The latter was a surprising inclusion to many after making only four senior appearances for the England national team, with his last coming in the Nations League drubbing against Hungary.
With Mount and Gallagher selected, there was hope that Reece James would be joining them but on Wednesday he confirmed that he had been informed he would not be heading to the World Cup after his injury suffered for Chelsea in the Champions League against AC Milan is likely to keep him out until the latter stages of the competition.
Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori were also both notable omissions with a Chelsea background with both having made the decision to seek first-team football in Italy with AS Roma and Inter, respectively. The duo have impressed overseas, each winning silverware in the process, but Southgate opted to leave them out of his squad.

After featuring in the Three Lions squad for the 2020 European Championships and thus when available called up to any international squads in the past year, Mount was an expected call up having made 32 appearances for his nation since his debut in 2019.
Mount has featured in some regard in all of Chelsea's 19 games this season notching two goals and four assists in the process and he is now set to be a part of a World Cup, which will likely be the first for many in England's young squad.
Understandably, the call up meant an awful lot to Mount and he has since posted a heart-warming story on social media, sharing a picture of himself in full England make-up watching the 2006 World Cup and now 16 years later he has described his call up as an "incredible feeling".
