Mason Mount interview: I’m very happy at Chelsea, the future is so exciting

Mason Mount has brushed off suggestions he could leave Chelsea and said he is ready to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old has entered the final two years of his current deal, having not signed fresh terms since making his first-team debut under Frank Lampard in 2019.

That has led to speculation over his future but Mount has reassured the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium and Chelsea supporters that he wants to stay at the club.

His status has grown hugely since he agreed his current contract three years ago and the England international is in line for a significant pay rise.

“After the last game of the season we had a little get-together at the hotel and he [Todd Boehly] was there with the rest of the consortium, it was good to meet them in person and speak to them all,” Mount said.

“It’s so exciting what the future holds. It’s an unknown but the way it’s started is really exciting to see what’s going to happen.

“We’re a team that over the last ten years has been up there and pushing and that is where we want to stay. Speaking to them about their goals and aims, we’re on the same page.

“So hopefully that continues. I’ve got two years left on my contract and I’m very, very happy here. Those talks will hopefully be starting soon.”

Chelsea finished last season 19 points behind Manchester City but reached two domestic cup finals and won the Club World Cup and European Super Cup.

Mount endured personal disappointment in the FA Cup Final, missing the decisive penalty as Chelsea were beaten by Liverpool in a shootout.

It meant the midfielder had a disappointing end to a season in which he had the top goal involvements at Chelsea, registering 13 goals and 16 assists.

“I would definitely put my hand up again,” Mount said. “You can always practice penalties on the training pitch but as soon as you get close to it you can’t match that feeling.

“I put it to the left and the ‘keeper went the right way and we know what happens. As soon as that happens you are gutted. You are in a final and you want to win things and it didn’t go our way. It’s then like you look back at it and think, what happened? What could go better? The process of walking to the ball, was it right?

“All the little things you can maybe do a bit better. You definitely get better and learn from those experiences. Hopefully next time I am in that position and I can put it away.

“We win together and lose together. We stay together. Hopefully one day I will lift that FA Cup and it will be a very sweet moment.”

Mount was also keen to add that his England team-mate Jordan Henderson quickly consoling him was a class act after Liverpool won their first FA Cup in 16 years.

“He said you are a top, top player,” revealed Mount.

“You will learn from it. It won’t change whatever you’ve done this season. It’s quite hard to remember in my head because, in that moment, I am still thinking what was I doing?!

“He is an unbelievable player and person so to understand my feeling at the time and not worry about having just won with his team, to come and console me and come straight over to me, speaks a lot about how he is as a person.”

Mount’s willingness to take penalties is based on a real belief in his ability.

The Cobham graduate has a broader belief in Chelsea’s squad which will add Raheem Sterling for £47.5million, with talks ongoing to sign Nathan Ake and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Mount thinks that, after pre-season and the transfer market is concluded, his side can aim to win any trophy, including the Premier League title.

“I set goals and targets last season and I managed to achieve them. I feel like last season was a good one for me. I still feel that performance-wise it could have been better.

“The Premier League is a massive goal of mine and for this season. That’s what you’re looking at as a group. You never know what can happen and that’s something we want to focus on.

“As a group, we are winners. You can see it over the last couple of years. We’ve always managed to get ourselves a winning opportunity and hopefully, that continues.”
