Mason Mount injury update given by Chelsea assistant manager after Plymouth Argyle victory

Chelsea assistant manager Arno Michels has provided an injury update on Blues midfielder Mason Mount after the 23-year-old was substituted in extra-time.

Mount played 97 minutes in the FA Cup tie with Plymouth Argyle, with the League One opposition forcing Thomas Tuchel’s men into extra-time.

Macaulay Gillesphey gave the away side the lead inside 10 minutes, winning a header from a free-kick to send the visiting fans into raptures.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta found a response just before half-time though, flicking the ball at the near-post to draw the side level.

The home fans had to wait until the 105th minute for their team to find a winner, with Marcos Alonso slotting home from a Kai Havertz cross.

Kepa Arrizabalaga had to be called upon late on though, as Malang Sarr gave away a penalty that put a penalty shootout back in the frame.

The Spaniard managed to save the spot-kick though, diving to his left to make sure last season’s finalists progress to the next round.

There will be concerns over fitness though, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount both going off in extra-time.

While Azpilicueta was able to walk off, there was worry for Mount who was visibly distressed after his shot from the edge of the box appeared to tweak something.

After the game, assistant manager Michels was on press duty, due to the absence of Tuchel, and said: "He felt an injury in extra time with this shot. He realised quick he felt pain and so we took him off.

"There will be further exams. Hopefully, it's not too bad but I can't promise what the situation is."

There will be hope that the duo are back to full fitness soon, with the Blues flying out soon to compete in the Club World Cup.

Their next match is on Wednesday, February 9, with the next soonest Premier League game on February 19 against Crystal Palace.
