Jorginho could hold the key for Arsenal to be able to sign Mason Mount this summer, with the former Chelsea midfielder having endorsed Mikel Arteta following his move to the Gunners.
Goal report that talks have taken place for Arsenal to sign the England international, with Liverpool also being linked to the 24-year-old Blues academy product. Mount's current season-ending injury means that he has been able to focus on his summer plans having been one of the victims of Chelsea's bloated squad this season.
Mount is reported to have rejected a new contract at Chelsea, with the return of Frank Lampard as interim manager not yet having been able to persuade the player to stay. This has opened the door for Moutn to be linked to other clubs, with the prospect of linking up with Arsenal boss Arteta on the cards.
He may be persuaded to join by ex-Chelsea teammate Jorginho, who has previously spoken about how working with Arteta was a big appeal for him joining the club. The Italian midfielder joined Arsenal in January and started against his former club in a resounding 3-1 win on Monday night.
His words when joining the Gunners were a ringing endorsement of Arteta, revealing a long-term pursuit from Spaniard. He told Arsenal.com in his first interview at the club: “He was a big influence because I know that he tried a few times to get me before and it didn’t happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes. So of course, he had a big influence."
Mount and Jorginho were both important players for Chelsea as they won the 2021 Champions League, with Mount providing the winning assist for Kai Havertz in the 1-0 win against Manchester City in the final. Jorginho had previously won the Europa League at Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri, also working with the Italian at Napoli and compared Arteta to the current Lazio boss in a later interview.
Would Mount be a good signing for Arsenal? Let us know your thoughts
Speaking to beIN Sports, the midfielder explained: "He [Arteta] reminds me a little bit of Sarri. I am used to working with a manager that looks into the details.
"For me, details make the difference in the end between a good team and a winning team," Jorginho continued. "I am sure, 100 per cent, that he worships [the details] so much.
"I’ve only been here a short time but I’m sure every day there is going to be something new and that’s why I’m so excited as well because I can see that I have so much to learn here."
However, there will be the consideration that Jorginho has yet to fully break into the first choice team at Arsenal, with just five starts in the Premier League since his arrival in January. There is expected to be a midfield overhaul at the club this summer, with Mount joining childhood friend Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo on a shortlist which could transform Arsenal's midfield.
