Mason Mount Chelsea injury latest as Graham Potter faces anxious wait ahead of Aston Villa

Graham Potter will be eager to find an update on Mason Mount's latest injury ahead of Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa. The 23-year-old has recently picked up a thigh issue and is currently a doubt for the Blues' trip to the West Midlands on Sunday.

Mount, who has entered the final two years of his contract with Chelsea, has featured eight times for the west Londoners in the Premier League so far this season, directly contributing towards two goals. The Cobham graduate suffered a rocky start to the season but, since Potter has taken the helm, he's enjoyed an up-turn in form.

However, Mount's vein of good form could unfortunately come to a halt this weekend. football.london understand that the England international did not take part in training on Friday, but Chelsea remain hopeful that he'll be available this weekend.

According to The Athletic, the midfielder is set to undergo a scan on his thigh as a 'precautionary measure'. The report states that Mount is anticipated to be involved at Villa Park after having been pulled at half-time in Chelsea's midweek bout with AC Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League.

He impressed, winning the penalty which gave the Blues a lead through Jorginho inside the opening half an hour. Speaking to BT Sport following the result, Joe Cole insisted that Mount is still widely underrated and has been the standout performer since the former Brighton boss arrived.

The former Chelsea midfielder said: "Another manager has come into Chelsea and another manager has deemed him vitally important to his team. He picks up pockets [of space], can play off the left, off the right, he is finding passes.

"Unless you stand and study Mason Mount, you don’t appreciate what he does. Off the ball he is picture perfect tactically, technically," Cole added. "Everything about him says he should be the focal point of this team. He has been the pick of the bunch in the Potter regime."

With Mount's deal at Stamford Bridge set to expire in two years, there's an expectation that he'll pen an extension but 'it could take time', according to The Telegraph. It's said that talks began over the summer and there is no agreement as of yet.
