About 320,000 low-income Maryland adults covered through Medicaid expansion will face new work requirements and twice-yearly renewals starting Jan. 1, 2027. The Maryland Department of Health now projects that as many as 152,000 of them could lose coverage between July 2026 and June 2028, up from an earlier estimate of 115,000.
These are projections, not counted losses. The state raised its estimate after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued an interim final rule in June that, according to state health officials, adds verification steps and narrows who qualifies as "medically frail."
