The Maryland Department of Health has declared a measles outbreak in St. Mary's, Carroll and Cecil counties, announcing 14 newly confirmed cases in unvaccinated residents as school districts across the state open for the year.
The declaration came Monday. Every one of the 27 cases Maryland has confirmed since July 15 involved an unvaccinated resident, and the state's total for the year now stands at 31, according to the Maryland Department of Health. Officials said no public exposure sites have been identified in the new cases, and there is no evidence of widespread community transmission, because most cases occurred among household contacts.
