Martin Terrier compared to Thierry Henry amid Leeds United links with Rennes forward

Leeds United are considering a move for Rennes forward Martin Terrier, according to L'Equipe. The Whites and West Ham United have reportedly made Terrier a 'priority signing', while Liverpool have also been linked with the player, but Jurgen Klopp's side are only expected to move for the Frenchman if Roberto Firmino leaves the Reds this summer.

Rennes are understood to want £34 million for Terrier, who has been at the club since 2020. Leeds have added seven players to their squad this summer, and they are expected to remain active in the transfer market.

With interest in the forward heating up, here is everything you need to know about Martin Terrier.

Who is Martin Terrier?

Terrier is a 25-year-old forward who plays for French club Rennes. He has spent all of his career in his native France, playing for some of the country's top clubs, and he is now being linked with a big Premier League move.

The Frenchman has played for Lille - where he was at between the ages of seven and 21 - Strasbourg, Lyon, and now Rennes.

Across the whole of his career in Ligue 1, Terrier has scored 44 times and assisted 17 goals in 162 appearances, and he has become more productive as his career has gone on.

What has Terrier done so far?

Terrier is coming off the back of his most impressive individual season yet. Last term, he was the third top scorer in Ligue 1. His 21 goals could only be bettered by Wissam Ben Yedder and Kylian Mbappe.

Terrier was also the UNFP player of the month for March, while he was also named in the team of the season. Despite the 2021/22 campaign being the standout season of his career, Terrier's numbers in the previous campaign were impressive. He registered nine goals and seven assists during his debut season at Rennes - the most productive campaign of his career until that point.

Terrier also tallied up some decent numbers in the 2018/19 season while at Lyon, scoring nine times in 32 appearances. The forward is still waiting for a first France senior cap, although he did appear 13 times for the under-21s national side, scoring seven goals.

What type of player is Terrier?

Terrier is a versatile forward, capable of playing anywhere across the front three, but with a preference for operating off the left. He is a fast, technical attacker and caught the eye from a young age with his direct ball-carrying style. Last season in particular, he proved himself to be a lethal finisher in front of goal. He has an ability to curl the ball into the far corner - something he says he was taught by a youth coach at Lille.

Terrier is an intelligent footballer, with an ability to float around the pitch, picking up positions which make him a nightmare for opposition defenders.

In an interview in April, Terrier said: "We play in a 4-3-3 and I'm on the left side of the attack, but during the games I can move around and play as a false nine or as a ten, or I can drop deep to get the ball."

The lively Terrier has benefitted from playing in a fluid pass-and-move style at Rennes, who finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season.

What's been said about Terrier?

Terrier was recently compared to France legend Thierry Henry by European football writer Tim Williams.

“He’s a very quick, left-sided right-footed attacking player whose trademark is coming in off the left flank and whipping shots in, a-la Thierry Henry," said Williams on the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast.

“Looking at his age and the phenomenal season he had last season, he will probably think that if he is ever going to make a big move to the Premier League, it’s probably going to be now or never."

Terrier has been compared to Henry before, a comparison that the Rennes forward finds flattering.

"That's very flattering - Thierry Henry is one of France's best-ever strikers," he said. "I'm a long way from that, but I do take inspiration from the best."
