A popular wetland centre will remain closed after an outbreak of avian flu.
Martin Mere Wetland Centre on the outskirts of Ormskirk closed its doors to visitors on Friday last week as a "precautionary measure to prevent the spread of avian influenza". In a statement, the centre has now had to cancel the North West Bird Watching Festival after a confirmed case of influenza.
Martin Mere has apologised for the "disappointment" the continued closure has caused saying they will "be in touch" to arrange refunds for the festival. New cases of bird flu were detected at premises in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lancashire over the weekend and have been on the rise in Lancashire since September 24.

Yesterday Freshfield Animal Rescue said they were on "high alert" after confirmed cases in the area. The UK government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency and UK Health Security Agency state that the risk to public safety is "very low". However, they have advised people not to touch or approach dead and unwell birds.
A statement posted on the Martin Mere website said: "Due to a confirmed case of avian influenza in our collection birds at the centre, we have had to cancel the North West Bird Watching Festival this weekend. We apologise for the disappointment we know this will cause and our team will be in touch to arrange any refunds. For the most updated information regarding our closure, please visit our website."
