Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has warned people not to be tempted to break the law ahead of expensive changes coming into force on April 1. From April 1 gas and electricity bills are going up for everyone, and householders have been given a piece of simple advice to ensure their bills are as low as possible.
On March 31 people should take a reading from their metres and supply it to their company - to ensure the maximum amount of gas and electricity is charged at the current, cheaper rate, rather than the more expensive tariff coming in from April 1.
On April 1, around 18 million households on standard tariffs will see an average increase of £693 - from £1,277 to £1,971 per year. Around 4.5 million prepayment customers will see an average increase of £708 - from £1,309 to £2,017, reports BirminghamLive.
