Martin Lewis warns 300,000 households are missing out on £150 cost of living payment

Martin Lewis has warned how 300,000 households are still yet to claim the £150 council tax rebate.

The one-off cost of living cash was first made available in April for households who live in council tax A to D properties.

If you pay your council tax by direct debit, then you should’ve received the £150 automatically.

Those who don’t pay by direct debit have to apply for the money by November 30 - a deadline that was recently extended.

If you’re eligible, you can apply for the rebate directly through your council, normally by filling out a form on its website.

You can find your local council through this page on the Gov.uk website.

Speaking during his Martin Lewis Money Show Live broadcast on ITV last night, Martin said it was “really important” households don’t forget to claim.

“You’ll remember back in April you the £150 help for cost of living on your council tax bill,” he said.

“There are still 300,000 people who haven’t claimed that and you’ve only got until November 30.

“If you’re in a council tax A to D property and you didn’t pay by direct debit when it was automatic, and you didn’t get it, then you need to claim now. Spread the word now.”

The vast majority of eligible households, around 19.1million, have already received their payment.

Who is entitled to the £150 rebate?

Those who live in properties in council tax bands A, B, C or D are eligible for the £150 rebate.

Councils in Scotland were awarding the payment to those in receipt of Council Tax Support as well.

If you’re in a council tax property with a band E, F, G and H (or I as well, in Wales) you might be able to get support through a separate discretionary fund.

Each council gets to decide who they can help and provide grants too - meaning the criteria does vary depending on where you live.

For example, some councils have offered the £150 to households claiming a council tax reduction or other benefits, or if they’re exempt from paying council tax.

We've asked the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities if the November 30 deadline applies in England, Wales and Scotland and we'll update this article when we hear back.

The council tax rebate doesn't need to be paid back.

Households in Northern Ireland don't pay council tax, so they aren't included in this cost of living help.
