Martin Lewis has urged people not to take what may seem like a simple step to take control of monthly spending on gas and electricity bills. The founder of Money Saving Expert has been asked a number of times whether people should cancel their direct debits paid to gas and electricity companies.
With a direct debit, the company sets the amount you pay and takes that sane amount every month -rather than you paying to the energy you use. That can mean you running up a surplus - the energy company having some of your money - or run into debt if the direct debit is not enough to cover the charge, reports MEN.
