Martin Lewis update over energy price cap freeze rumours

Martin Lewis has issued an energy price cap update after hearing "mutterings" of government talks.

The finance guru has been keeping his many followers up-to-date with the latest news as the cost of living crisis worsens. Mr Lewis is known for his switching and money-saving tips, but recent events have left even him at a loss at how to help people.

The Money Saving Expert founder took to Twitter on Monday to let his many followers know he'd heard rumours the British Government were in talks with energy firms.

He said: "I'm hearing mutterings that there are talks with govt and big energy firms going on today. I suspect if it is true that Liz Truss is proposing freezing the price cap, that will be the meat of the meeting - is it practicable at speed."

It comes after Ms Truss was announced as the new Prime Minister earlier today (Tuesday). The new PM used her victory speech to pledge to "deliver on the energy crisis" by dealing with bills as well as supplies.

A freeze on energy bills is understood to be one of a number of options being worked up in Whitehall to help struggling households cope with the soaring cost of gas and electricity.

Many Twitter users were quick to respond to Mr Lewis' tweet. Stephen Adamson said: "My main question who pays for the freeze? Public purse essentially paying these suppliers billions or are they taxing them to pay for it? why are we not nationalising as it would also be cheaper?"

Adam Fare said: "If it does happen, great, but how awful of the Govt to leave it so long though and put people's mental health into tatters. It's almost like a sick game to them." BuddingGenius said: "It’s still too much for the average family. This should have been done weeks ago."
