Martin Lewis shares cheapest supermarket to buy Christmas dinner

With Christmas just over one week away, many families will be looking to stock up on their food essentials.

As the majority look forward to tucking into their festive roast dinner, families are no doubt also looking for best ways to keep those costs down as the cost of living soars. But according to Martin Lewis, one supermarket has come out on top when it comes to the cheapest items.

The money saving expert team has compared the cost of individual items from a Christmas dinner at the UK's leading supermarkets. Based on a meal for four, items included turkey, carrots, cranberry sauce, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, Yorkshire puddings, sprouts, mince pies and Christmas pudding, the Mirror reports.

Aldi was the cheapest place for essential items, bringing in a total of £23.33 for all items. This was closely followed by £23.35 at Asda. However, the team said there is more value for money at Aldi in terms of bag sizes and prices.

Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket at £46.20 for the full shop. Here is the full breakdown from the findings as of December 8:

  • Aldi - £23.33
  • Asda - £23.35
  • Tesco - £23.62
  • Lidl - £24.62
  • Morrisons - £24.91
  • Iceland - £26.60
  • Sainsbury's - £28.37
  • Marks and Spencer - £38
  • Waitrose - £46.20

However, although this study was based on individual items, some supermarkets may be offering Christmas dinner deals with set items which could work out cheaper.

Where possible they also compared each item like-for-like, including weight and product amount, and went for the next best option if the exact size wasn't available.

Mr Lewis previously repeated an important message to Christmas shoppers as we head towards the big day. Last year, the Money Saving Expert founder shared a number of top Christmas shopping tips. On Monday, he took to Twitter to remind people they have no legal right to have anything bought in stores refunded.

Along with a poll, he said: "Just writing my Christmas consumer rights guide. Be honest, are you surprised when I say [you have] NO LEGAL RIGHT to return goods bought in store if u change their mind, or they don't fit when u get them home (though some stores allow it). You've only a legal return right if they're faulty."
