Martin Lewis sends important message to homes with slow internet connection

Martin Lewis shared an important message with households dealing with slow internet connections.

The Money Saving Expert joined This Morning to help viewers battle the cost of living crisis. A caller asked for help with her broadband service, stating it is drastically slower than what her provider promised.

She claimed she pays £30.49 a month and is locked into a contract until 2024 but has seen a monumental drop in standards during her five-year relationship with them.

She asked what she can do to tackle her slow internet connection and if she can leave her contract in order to follow a better deal. Martin revealed she could be entitled to leave her contract penalty-free if her provider isn't meeting basic requirements.

He said: "You need to check what speed your router is getting. Use an ethernet cable to do a speed test with it attached and one without it to see if it's your router that's not pumping the signal around the house or if it's the speed that it's coming into your house.

"If it is your plugged-in speed that is the problem, depending on who your provider is and if they are signed up to Ofcom's Voluntary Code of Practice policy, if you are not getting the guaranteed minimum speed you agreed to then you are allowed to leave penalty-free. If your provider is not signed up for the Ofcom policy then it gets a little bit trickier.

He added: "The best time to call these places is mid-afternoon. There are a lot of steps to take so check whether it is the wifi in your house, the speed it's coming in, if your provider is signed up to the policy and if you are still having trouble, take it further."
