Martin Lewis says 'act today' to slash £1000s off your bills

Martin Lewis is urging people across the country to "act today" to drastically reduce their bills amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The Money Saving Expert founder regularly shares ways people can save cash, or make their money go further. He gives advice on TV, radio, his BBC podcast, and social media, and it's never been needed more than in the current financial climate.

In the latest instalment of the MSE newsletter, a weekly email full of money-saving tips and tricks, he made a bold call to action.

Martin said: "Stop ripping yourself off! Don't hold your breath and wait for politicians to fix owt. Take action today to slash £1,000s off bills". [sic]

He added that as price rises "push many to the brink" a few recent Government announcements have been "helpful but not game-changing". Martin said people are "ripping themselves off by inaction".

One area where many people in England and Wales can make savings, he said, is on water bills. His rule of thumb is that if you have more or the same number of bedrooms in your home than people, you would likely save money by getting a water meter.

There are also water discount schemes in place for people on certain benefits.

Martin also advised people to check what savings can be made on mobile phone contracts, adding a fan named Dawn had saved almost £300 a year by using the MSE Cheap Sims tool to reduce her bill from £34 a month to £5 a month. Similarly, a Cheap Broadband tool will show you any available lower-priced deals in your area.

Savers are also being advised to "ditch and switch" if banks aren't passing on the increased interest rates, and supermarket shoppers have been reminded of a number of discount codes they can use, as well as other ways to lower grocery bills.
