Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert explains Ryanair flight hack have that could save you cash

Consumer champion Martin Lewis and his team at Money Saving Expert have shared travel tips that could save jet setters hundreds of pounds.

After the uncertainty around travelling abroad since the pandemic started, entry requirements are now starting to ease, especially for those who are fully vaccinated.

For those arriving into the UK, either coming home or visiting, pre-departure and Covid tests have been scrapped for those who have had two doses of the jab and those who aren't fully vaccinated no longer have to isolate or take a day eight Covid test.

This makes international travel a lot cheaper for many.

And now as the cost of living is rising, Brits will be looking to save money where they can.

Luckily, the team at Money Saving Expert explained how to save cash on Ryanair flights.

Ryanair offers a range of fares with their cheapest called 'Value fare'.

The Value fare only includes the flight ticket and one small bag that can fit under the seat.

The fare up from that, the 'Regular fare' includes carry on luggage that can go in the overhead locker, a smaller bag, reserved seating and priority boarding.

The team at Money Saving Expert said that travellers could save money by opting for the Value fare and then adding the extras separately.

Although they warn it might not work 'every time', so it's best to check both ways before booking.

The airline says it's perfect for passengers that are travelling light with a small amount of items as it includes one small cabin bag.

The website says that "Our spot-checks found you could save 30 percent on average by booking separately. In one case, a family of four could save £99 on return flights – a whopping 59 percent saving on the Regular fare."

They add: "It's all about how you add your extras. When you've chosen your flights, you're presented with a few different fare options – 'Value', 'Regular' and 'Plus' are the main ones. So if you want a seat reservation and a larger cabin bag, you've a choice:

  • "Option 1: Choose the Regular fare (usually £21-£23 extra per person, per flight). This gets you 'priority and two cabin bags' and a reserved seat, so you can board the plane first and take a wheelie bag into the cabin in addition to the small carry-on everyone can take for free. Plus you can select your own seat (in rows 18-33).

  • "Option 2: Choose the Value fare, then add the extras separately (about £9-£33 extra per person, per flight). Continue through the booking process until you're asked if you want to pay to select a seat (around £3-£13 each way for rows 18-33) and add 'priority and two cabin bags' (£6-£20 each way).

"To be clear, with both options you get a reserved seat in rows 18-33, priority boarding and two cabin bags, one of which can be a wheelie bag weighing up to 10kg. We asked Ryanair why it often charges more for the Regular package, but it didn't respond to our queries."
