Martin Lewis issues £66 warning to those on pre-payment meters

Martin Lewis has sent an important warning to those on pre-payment meters.

Taking to Twitter he shared that many people on non-smart pre-payment meters are still yet to claim their winter energy help vouchers. The government have issued energy bill help to all households with all homes receiving £400 off their energy bills from October, with the discount made in six instalments to help families throughout the winter period.

Households will see a discount of £66 applied to their energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 each month from December through to March 2023. But the Money Saving Expert warned that many people may be missing out by forgetting to take action.

He wrote: "Are you on a NON-SMART PREPAYMENT energy meter? If so there are reports today many people on these have not yet claimed their £66/mth winter energy help vouchers. If you're in that position, have you claimed, if not why not (maybe just not topped up yet after pre-loading?)".

If you are on a traditional pre-payment meter then your supplier should have already been in touch to let you know how you receive the credit - which will be either through vouchers or a credit.

If you get discount vouchers, these will be sent to you by text message, email or post. Alternatively, you might have been told that you’ll be credited automatically when you top up at your usual top-up point. You should get in touch with your supplier now if they haven’t already contacted you about how you’ll get your discount.

The Post Office, the UK's biggest voucher processor, said only 60% of those eligible had redeemed the credits so far, which are valid for 90 days. The government has urged consumers to use the credit as soon as possible.
