Martin Lewis has felt forced to delete a story he shared about his nine-year-old daughter after he was targeted by 'horrible' trolls. In a now-deleted tweet, the Money Saving Expert founder took to the social media platform on Wednesday (October 19), to recall a sweet conversation he had with his young daughter Sapphire about politics.
But after Martin was basically accused of lying about the conversation, he has now explained why he had deleted the post in a follow-up tweet and asked his followers to consider why he would 'bother making something like that up'.
"Just been blown away by mini MSE (aged 9)," the original post began, as reported by the Mirror. "I asked her if she knew what the government's job is. She simply replied: 'The government's job is to help shape the country.'" The proud father concluded by saying: "Brilliant and succinct."
But Martin, who shares his daughter with his 5 News weather presenter wife Lara Lewington, didn't expect that within minutes of sharing his post with his 1.9million followers, Twitter users would be tagging the Didn’t Happen of the Year Awards (@_DHOTYA) account underneath the star's update.
DHOTYA is an account dedicated to sharing social media posts that is made up of posts from Twitter users which people believe to be false. They were suggesting the Good Morning Britain presenter had fabricated the conversation with his daughter in the hope of getting a reaction.
After he deleted his original tweet, Martin took to Twitter once again to write: "Twitter really is a horrible place sometimes. I tweeted a nice little comment about my little girl. Only to get lots of @_DHOTYA replies. Why would i bother making something like that up. I was proud of her. I've deleted it, as i can't be bothered with people who want to ruin it."
He went on to add: "Just to clarify this wasn't the @_DHOTYA account, it was people copying it in." The Didn't Happen of the Year Awards account was quick to support Martin in the replies, writing: "Didn’t see the post - but if anybody has ever earned immunity from DHOTYA this year it’s Martin Lewis."
Last week Martin was celebrating after winning a new award at the National Television Awards. Some of the biggest names in British television descended upon London's OVO Arena Wembley last Thursday (October 13) to celebrate another big year in television, and the faces behind some of those shows.
A new category was added this year, celebrating television experts who inform and entertain with their extensive knowledge. Those shortlisted for the new award this year included David Attenborough, Kaleb Cooper, Jay Blades, and Martin who emerged victiorus on the night.
The 50-year-old financial guru appeared stunned as he was invited up onto the stage to collect his award. He said: "You know, when you're up against an international treasure like David Attenborough you don't normally expect to win. I'm quite shocked and Jay and Kaleb do brilliant work too. Whoever said we've had enough of experts - no we haven't, we need them more than ever right now."
He then shared many thank yous before taking a pop at the government. "It's been a pretty horrible year financially, I mean, the money crisis has been disastrous and left many people with terrible issues and mental health problems. I'm afraid the next year with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rents is going to be pretty bad. And you know what? We need somebody to get a grip on the economy, and put things a little bit better."
He then added: "But I shall leave that for my show which is back on next Tuesday, tonight this nerd is gonna party." Later, on social media, Martin dropped the F-bomb as he reacted to his success by simply tweeting: "****ing hell :) #NTAs."
