Martin Lewis fan explains how they will save £900 each year on household bill

A fan of Martin Lewis has shared how they helped their parents save £900 on one of their household bills by following his tips.

The story was shared in this week's MoneySavingExpert.com newsletter after the reader wrote in to the consumer website.

The reader, known only as Tinkerbaby, said they had been asking their parents to get a meter "for a long time".

Finally, their parents listened and are now getting a water meter installed in their home.

Tinkerbaby says the couple are currently paying £1,400 for this particular bill however, after the switch it is likely this will be cut by around £900 a year.

Tinkerbaby tweeted: "@MartinSLewis Been telling parents for a long time to get a meter, they pay £1,400 as a couple.

"Dad now getting it installed and it's likely he'll save £900/yr. Wish he'd done it years ago."

The recent MSE newsletter noted that the water industry at the moment was in "crisis" and there was talk of bills rising by 40% - on top of the 5.7% average rise the UK saw this year.

One way of potentially being able to cut your water bill is by seeing if you should get a water meter.

According to Martin Lewis, if you have more or the same number of bedrooms in your house than people, then it is worth seeing if you would benefit.

The MoneySavingExpert.com founder has often urged people, particularly those with larger homes, to check if they could be better off.

This is because water bills are based on the value of a person’s house, meaning that the bigger the house, the bigger the water bills will be.

Not everyone will save with a meter but water companies will give you two years to trial one and switch back if you’re unhappy.

The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) has a water meter calculator on its website that can help you work out if you might save.

The calculator asks you questions about your water use and tells you your estimated costs if you have a meter.

These are questions like how many people live in your home, the number of showers you have a week, your dishwasher use, and what you're paying at the moment.

If you're told you cannot have a water meter installed, the MSE newsletter tells you to "not give up" as you can ask for an assessed charge to save instead.

This charge is estimated on what you would pay if you had a water meter fitted.
