Martin Compston throws doubt on hopes of a Line of Duty season 7 despite rumours

Line of Duty star Martin Compston has addressed rumours that a seventh series of the hit BBC show is in the works and issued a warning against fans getting ahead of themselves.

The Scottish actor, who plays Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the hit BBC crime drama, was quizzed on the future of the show during an appearance on Good Morning Britain.

Following the runaway success of season six of Line of Duty, which came to a dramatic conclusion in May of last year, Compston offered fans a glimpse of the future of the AC-12.

He said: “Look, nothing’s changed. I’m really chuffed, we’re really delighted people still want us back.

“That conversation, we had a really honest one whether we were all up for doing it again, and I believe we all are.

“But unfortunately, at this point in time, there’s nothing immediate, there’s nothing coming very soon. I think we’d all like to at some point, it’s just all getting us together.”

He expressed disappointment that the Line of Duty speculation has created a lot of anticipation among fans when there was not yet anything concrete to get excited over.

He added: "I think probably the best thing is to wait for official confirmation from us, because it’s not fair on the fans either, people getting excited and not knowing what’s gonna happen."

This comes after Compston’s co-star Adrian Dunbar gave hope to Line of Duty fans with a major hint there could be a seventh series.

The actor said he was hopeful that writer Jed Mercurio was working on a fresh outing for his much-loved character Ted Hastings and the rest of the AC-12 team.

When Dunbar appeared on GMB back in October, he teased that ‘within the next few weeks or couple of months we might hear something’.

While there has been no official update so far, Adrian said: “I think generally there’s a willingness amongst everybody to do something – but I think we’re just gonna have to wait a little bit longer.”

Adrian, 64, said it would feel wrong to end with a series made during lockdown, when he and co-stars Vicky McClure and Martin Compson were unable to have as much fun as they usually do.

On filming the sixth series, screened last year on BBC1, he said: “It wasn’t quite as fun. We couldn’t hang out, we couldn’t go out. We were all in a kind of bubble so it didn’t have the same feel – which is one of the reasons we’d like to do another one.”
