Australia allrounder Mitch Marsh has effectively given himself out when no-one else was certain in a second Test brain fade against India.
Marsh was adjudged caught behind from Ravichandran Ashwin's bowling for nine on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.
The No.6 batsman attempted a forward defensive shot to an Ashwin spinner in the middle session of the second day of play.
The ball passed through to wicketkeeper Rishahb Pant who, along with Ashin, made half-hearted appeals.
As they did so, a sheepish-looking Marsh immediately took a step towards the dressing room before stopping to look at umpire Richard Illingworth.
Illingworth gave Marsh out and the batsman didn't break stride in exiting the oval.
But replays showed Marsh had missed the ball by some margin, though there was a noise from his bat striking his front bad.
"He took that step and that is what may have convinced the umpire," Ravi Shastri said in commentary for Fox Sports.
His fellow commentator Adam Gilchrist was nonplussed.
"That is extraordinary. Watch his reaction," Gilchrist said.
"Amazing run of events there ... nothing on snicko ... that is well past the outside edge, the bat is just clipping the pad there.
"Clearly he was sure he hit it otherwise he would have reviewed the decision."
